Here are some abstract photos I made by purposeful going out of focus, “spinning” the camera during exposure, zooming during exposure and moving the camera in different motions during exposure. Click on an image below to see a larger view.
I enjoy making these. I suppose they could be seen as gimmicky … circus tricks (and not really difficult ones at that). But I do think they have a beauty about them. They also allow the viewer to bring themselves into the photo because they’re very open to interpretation. Let me know what you think.
- I created this photo by defocusing (I think) and moving the camera during the exposure. I took it on South University Drive in Fargo.
- This is a picture of some lights on a bank sign and some other sources on University Drive in Fargo. I threw it way out of focus and zoomed during the exposure.
- Again, out of focus, zooming during exposure.
- I was moving the camera in a circular motion during a long exposure on this onw.
- I believe for this one, I threw it way out of focus and twisted the camera and zoomed during the exposure.
- Out of focus (I think) and “spinning” camera as I made the exposure.
- Again zooming and spinning camera.
- I think I was moving the camera horizontally while making this exposure. It’s also very out of focus. It reminds me of the Pop Artist Rosenquist.
- Another out-of-focus spin zoom.
- Yet another out -of-focus spin zoom.
- Out of focus and rotating the camera during exposure.
- Out of focus and zooming again.
- I’m not sure exactly what I was doing here. The camera was out of focus and I was moving it during the exposure, but I’m not sure exactly sure how I was moving it.
- This is an image of an ethanol plan at night. I zoomed while shooting it.
- This is also of the ethanol plant near Casselton, N.D. It was a long exposure at night and I was zooming in and out during exposure.
